Tumaria Dam
Tumaria Dam is one of the Terai’s great reservoirs. It lies near Maldhan village in the Ramnagar area and is fed by the Phika and Dhela rivers. The dam is about 10 km long and about 15 m high, and it is listed as the longest dam in the Ramganga river basin. Open water, reedbeds, mudflats and forest edges come together here, which attracts a rich variety of birds. River lapwings and river terns are regulars, and winter brings migrants such as ruddy shelducks, bronze-winged jacanas and the occasional Pallas’s gull. Wide skies and calm water make it a favourite for photographers, especially in the early morning light.
